Drop In
The
Drop-in was originally set up to provide a space for young people in the city
centre with a coffee bar supplying affordable drinks and snacks for young
people and students (many will remember our cheese toasties). From a very
early stage it became clear that young people in the city centre also needed
support and help with a huge range of issues including homelessness, poverty
and unemployment.
The
Drop-in became a focal point for young people to talk to members of staff
and to gain assistance. It also remained a meeting place for young people
and a space for them to use in the city centre, which they could afford unlike
commercial cafes.
Although the drop-in has changed over the time and has been refurbished on a number of occasions, the atmosphere and environment has continued to be welcoming and safe for young people and staff. One of the most rewarding experiences for staff who have worked at the project over the years, has been to see young people actively participate in the work of the drop-in making it their space, with their own ground rules and regular young people's meetings.
In
August 2001, the project carried out its biggest refurbishment yet. With financial
support from the government's ICT Learning Centres Initiative, we have remodelled
our entire Drop-in space. We now have a computer room with 5 PCs, all linked
to the internet. We also have a one to one quiet room, and a completely refurbished
general Drop-in area. The response from young people using the project has
been tremendously positive, and we are now able to offer a whole new range
of experiences for our Drop-in users.
